Munich Longevity Symposium on February 25, 2026: International experts discuss biological aging at TUM
How old are the heart, liver, and brain really? And can human aging be slowed down in a targeted manner? These are the kinds of questions addressed by the Munich Longevity Symposium, which is organized by the Associate Professorship of Exercise Biology at the Technical University of Munich. The symposium is hosted by TUM as part of the Center for Cardiovascular and Metabolic Health (CVMH). The symposium will take place on Wednesday, February 25, 2026, from 4 to 6 PM at the TUM Campus in the Olympic Park (Lecture Hall 1) and will bring together leading international scientists in the field of aging and longevity research. Prof. Dr. Jeanne Rubner, TUM Vice President for Global Communication & Public Engagement, will give the welcome address.
The event is organized by the Associate Professorship of Exercise Biology under the direction of Prof. Dr. Henning Wackerhage and the Else Kröner-Fresenius Center for Nutritional Medicine under the direction of Prof. Dr. Hans Hauner. The focus is on so-called biomarkers of aging – methods that can be used to determine the biological age of individual organs such as the heart, liver, muscles, or brain. These markers are considered a key prerequisite for clinical studies on longevity, as they can show whether interventions actually slow down aging processes. At the same time, they have high clinical potential, as biological age is considered one of the strongest predictors of disease risk and mortality.
“Staying young is the best prevention – even better than physical training alone,” emphasizes Prof. Wackerhage. “Numerous substances and methods that can slow down aging have been identified in animal experiments. However, it is still largely unclear whether these approaches also work in humans.”
The symposium's guests include two internationally renowned experts in the field of age biomarkers: Dr. Chiara Herzog (University of Innsbruck / King's College London) and Prof. Dr. Tony Wyss-Coray from Stanford University. Dr. Herzog will present modern multi-omic approaches to measuring biological age. Prof. Wyss-Coray will provide insights into his groundbreaking work on the blood proteome and organ-specific aging processes.
Another highlight of the program is the presentation of the initial results of the TauAge study, a clinical intervention study investigating whether the amino acid taurine can slow down human aging. The study is being conducted jointly by Prof. Hauner and Prof. Wackerhage in close international collaboration.
“Methodologically, our TauAge study is one of the most ambitious intervention studies on human aging,” says Prof. Wackerhage. “If the data indicate that taurine actually delays biological aging processes in humans, this will attract a great deal of attention, not only scientifically but also socially.”
The Munich Longevity Symposium is aimed at researchers, clinicians, students, and interested members of the public. Participation is free of charge, but prior registration is required. The event will be held in English.
