With its world-famous tent roof construction, the Olympic Park is the heart of the event - as it was in 1972. With the European Championships Munich 2022 (EC 2022), Munich 2022 will host the biggest sports event since the Olympic Games 50 years ago. Concentrated top-class sport is returning to the cosmopolitan city with a heart, true to the motto "Back to the Roofs".
Nine European Championships under one roof, over 4,700 athletes competing for gold, silver and bronze: from August 11 to 21, the program of the multi-sport event offers everything an athlete's heart desires - and much more besides.
With a medal decision in apparatus gymnastics (all-around final) directly on the first day, the EC 2022 will take its course. The competitions will end with the men's and women's 4x100-meter finals on August 21. A total of 177 medals will be awarded, 35 of them on the last day of competition.
Already on day one, the program is wide-ranging: In addition to apparatus gymnastics, the competitions in track cycling, BMX freestyle, rowing as well as in the climbing disciplines bouldering and lead will start. Finally, on August 12, the triathletes will start their competition. Here, the first medal decisions will be made immediately.
The track and field athletes and beach volleyball players will start the European Championships at the same time. For the beach volleyball players, the group phase begins on August 15. The finals will take place on August 20 and 21. Also for the track and field athletes the 15th of August is the starting signal. On the one hand, the marathon will take the athletes across Munich. On the other hand, the competitions will start in the Olympic Stadium. Divided into morning and evening sessions, medal decisions will take place on each of the following days, starting on the first day of competition.
From August 13 to 18 (doubles) and from August 14 to 21 (singles), you can cheer on the German table tennis players around Timo Boll. The competitions of the canoe racers can be followed from August 18. The mountain bike cross-country athletes will be the last to start the European Championships on August 19 as the first day of competition.
The multi-sport event will be framed by "The Roofs", the "Festival of Munich 2022" - a mix of music, culture, art and food. With eleven different "Roofs," there is plenty to do in and around Munich at the respective venues of the European Championships besides sports.
A central point is the so-called "Central Roof". It is located in the Olympic Park and is the event location for major musical performances. The official opening will be kicked off by the Rostock rapper Marteria ("Lila Wolken") on August 10 at 6:30 PM. On the following days, well-known artists such as Alphaville will perform. True Munich natives can also look forward to the cult band Münchener Freiheit on August 20. The entire festival program is free of charge.
