Prof. Dr. Michael Schaffrath, head of the Department of Media and Communication, and Dr. Thorsten Schulz, Research Associate at the Chair of Preventive Pediatrics, gave two lectures at the DOSB Trainer Academy in Cologne on June 28. In the auditorium were representatives of the Trainer Academy, the National Anti Doping Agency (NADA) and the Federal Institute for Sport Science (BISp), in addition to the approximately 30 coach coordinators from various top sports associations.
Schaffrath and Schulz presented selected results from the BISp-funded research project "(Top) Coaches and the Media: An Analysis of the Perception and Evaluation of Doping Reporting and the Impact on Training Work". Cooperation partners in this project were NADA and the Trainer Academy, with whom, for example, the questionnaire for the online survey was coordinated. 822 top trainers took part in the survey, which corresponded to a good response rate of 33.6 percent.
Prof. Schaffrath gave a presentation on "Opinions of coaches on the quality of doping reporting and the competence of doping reporters". The title of Dr. Schulz's presentation was: "Top coaches, media, doping and the question of responsibilities: Opinions, Attitudes, Contexts and Differences".
Following the presentations, the two members of the Department of Sport and Health Sciences discussed with the audience the significance and concrete application of the research findings for the practical work of coaches with their athletes as well as with sports journalists when it comes to the topics of doping, doping reporting and doping prevention
