Syst. Neurosci. This theoretical paper resulted from a workshop which was organized by Vanessa Lux (Bochum) and Melanie Krüger (TUM; Hannover) at the center for interdisciplinary research, ZIF, Bielefeld. Its aim was to discuss embodiment research from diverse scientific areas such as cognitive science and neuroscience, epigenetics and sociology.

Embodiment means the grounding of mental processes in the body. The paper outlines an approach towards an interdisciplinary conceptualization of embodiment, presenting a developmental perspective on embodiment. This view could account for the different timescales that underlie the processes of either the incorporation of experiences or the expression of an agent’s bodily conditions. It also relates different levels of embodiment (from gen expression to motor learning) to one another as they develop over the lifespan, based on their biological and functional interconnectedness.
