The Assistant Professorship of Public Health and Prevention headed by Prof. Dr. Michael Laxy won two conference awards at the International Diabetes Epidemiology Group (IDEG) Symposium, which took place in Porto, Portugal, from December 2 to 5.
Min Fan, a Research Associate at the Professorship, presented her ongoing work on "Early health economic analysis of outpatient prevention strategies to avoid complications in diabetes mellitus." These aim to demonstrate the potential positive economic impact of screening interventions in real clinical practice. At the Symposium, she was awarded the prize for "best mini-oral and poster presentation."
Also recognized was the poster by Dr. Anna-Janina Stephan, also a Research Associate at the Professorship, with which she presented an ongoing project on "Development of machine learning algorithms of stroke and myocardial infection in diabetes patients based on health insurance claims data." The poster received the "best general poster" award.
"The International Diabetes Epidemiology Group Symposium is a prestigious international conference that is held only every two years. It is truly a remarkable achievement that Min Fan and Anna-Janina Stephan won two of the three conference awards with their excellent contributions. We are very happy about this", Prof. Laxy is enthusiastic about the awards for his two colleagues.
In addition, Prof. Laxy and his team held a pre-conference workshop in Porto on "Evaluation of intervention effectiveness using observational data and quasi-experimental design" for about 35 PhD students and postdocs from the fields of epidemiology and medicine.
Prof. Laxy started with a theoretical introduction on causal inference and different quasi-experimental designs. In the afternoon, the two Research Associates Dr. Anna-Janina Stephan and Dr. Michael Hanselmann gave a deeper insight into the application of difference-in-difference analyses and regression-discontinuity analyses with the help of R exercise sessions.
