ChroVID Study
Impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on health care for patients with chronic diseases (ChroVID)
Content
The ChroVID study is conducted by the Chair of Epidemiology (Prof. Dr. Stefanie Klug) together with the Chair of Health Economics (Prof. Dr. Leonie Sundmacher) at the Faculty of Sport and Health Sciences at the Technical University of Munich. For this project health claims data, prescription data and disease management program data of approximately 11 million people, provided by the Bavarian Association of Statutory Health Insurance Physicians (KVB) will be used.
Study Objectives
The objective of this project is to investigate the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on health care for patients with chronic diseases focusing on patients with type 2 diabetes, coronary heart disease and cancer. The project addresses the following overarching research questions:
- How did incidence of newly diagnosed chronic disease and mortality develop during the pandemic?
- How do patient characteristics and area indicators impact upon the continuity of care for chronically diseased patients during the corona pandemic?
- Is there any indication that changes in preventive and primary care for patients with chronic disease are associated with changes in health outcomes?
Funding
The study is funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG) as part of the call for “Multidisciplinary Research into Epidemics and Pandemics in Response to the Outbreak of SARS-CoV-2“.
Study Design
This observational study will describe how diagnosis, disease management, prevention and access to health care have developed during the pandemic in comparison to the pre-pandemic period. By using reliable routine data that covers over 85% of the Bavarian population, important insights into the disruptions of continuity of health care utilization in Bavaria will be generated.
Confidentiality
For this study, the Bavarian Association of Statutory Health Insurance Physicians (KVB) will provide anonymized data.
