The 21st ACM SIGKDD Conference on Knowledge Discovery and Data Mining took place from the 10th to 13th of August2015 in Sydney. This conference series is one of the most important events of the international computer science community. As a part of this conference a satellite workshop on Large-Scale Sports Analytics was taking place. Its focus lies on the modelling, analysis and interpretation of large data sets in professional sport collected by tracking systems, event-loggers of physiological sensors.
Dr. Daniel Link (Chair of Performance Analysis and Computer Science in Sport) talked about data analysis in professional soccer based on positional data. He presented a new approach for detecting and analysis of individual ball possession. This work provides the fundamental models for identifying tactical concepts like passing quality, availability or marking strategies based on player and ball coordinates.
