The AusTher Study

The AusTher study investigates the incidence of secondary malignant neoplasms (SMNs) in Saxony, as well as the effect of primary tumor therapy on the development of SMNs. The study is conducted by Cancer Epidemiology (Head: Prof. Stefanie Klug) at the University Cancer Center, University Hospital Carl Gustav Carus, Technische Universität Dresden.
Aims of Study
Using clinical cancer registry data, the AusTher study investigates the incidence of SMNs in Saxony, as well as potential risk factors associated with the development of SMNs.
Funding
The study is funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) and is scheduled to be completed within six years.
Study Design
The AusTher Study is divided into two phases (Phase I and Phase II).

Figure 1: Study Design
Phase I investigates all SMNs in Saxony, based on anonymous clinical cancer registry (KKR) data. Data related to diagnosis and therapy will be collected and analyzed. Based on the results of Phase I, the five most common SMNs will be investigated in a case-control study during Phase II.
Persons diagnosed with one of the five most common SMNs, will be compared with persons who did not develop SMNs (controls). The effect of primary tumor therapy on the development of SMNs will be analyzed. In addition, questionnaires will be sent to all cases and controls in order to investigate additional risk factors.
Confidentiality
Phase I (2014-2016)
During the first phase, only anonymous data will be analyzed. Anonymous data will be combined and analyzed at Cancer Epidemiology, University Cancer Center, University Hospital Carl Gustav Carus, Technische Universität Dresden.
Phase II (2016-2020)
