At the symposium Wind of Change – Paradigmenwechsel für die Altenpflege, organized by the Domino Coaching Foundation on 17 September 2025, in Berlin, M.Sc. Lara Becker, researcher at Exercise Biology, School of Medicine and Health, Technical University of Munich, presented a compelling lecture on the role of muscle training in healthy aging.
Becker emphasized that aging is a natural biological process characterized by progressive loss of function, particularly in muscle mass and strength. Drawing on current research, she demonstrated that resistance training can counteract these declines, even in advanced age. Benefits include improved mobility, enhanced metabolic health, and a higher overall quality of life.
The lecture advocated for a paradigm shift in geriatric medicine—from passive aging to active health promotion. Becker highlighted that muscle loss (sarcopenia) is a diagnosable condition and that strength training is a key intervention to maintain independence and reduce age-related morbidity.
A memorable moment occurred when Becker invited the audience to participate in simple strength exercises, underscoring the accessibility and immediate impact of physical activity. Her message was clear: “Strength training works at any age—even in care facilities—and every additional muscle gained is a step toward autonomy.”
The presentation concluded with insights into longevity research and the importance of extending the health span, not just the lifespan. Becker referenced the global “Blue Zones” as examples of how lifestyle, including regular physical activity, contributes to healthy aging.
