Travel of Dr. Jacob Burns and Prof. Michael Laxy to Tanzania to kick-off new projects on Adolescent Health in Sub-Saharan Africa
Dr. Jacob Burns and Prof. Michael Laxy travelled to Dar es Salaam, Tanzania from Jan 16th – Jan 20th to initiate and discuss upcoming projects that will build on the African Research Network for Implementation Science and Education (ARISE). During this kick-off meeting, they co-organized and moderated several sessions on the NUTRINT* and another upcoming project, for which they lead and co-lead on activities related to the evaluation of interventions and health policies in partner countries to improve adolescent health. The meeting was participated by around 50 researchers from the ARISE network, which is largely made up partners from Sub-Saharan Africa, as well as some European and North American partners. The constructive and creative discussions that were held will be critical for the initial and further steps within the project.
In addition, Michael Laxy presented on Jan 19th at the 4th Annual Symposium of the ARISE Network on translating research into practice for adolescent health and nutrition in sub-Saharan. The presentation focused on the envisioned approach and methodology for the upcoming work together with the ARISE network. The meeting was attended by around 200 researchers, stakeholders and policy makers including Prof. Abel Makubi, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Health in Tanzania. Importantly, multiple youth representatives also attended the meeting, one of who also presented the perceptions and experiences of youth related to priorities in adolescent health research.
