Title: Early health economic analysis of outpatient screening strategies to avoid late complications in patients with type 2 diabetes
Funding Body: DAK-Gesundheit
Funding Period: 2020-2022
Partners: Helmholtz Munich
Objectives:
- The aim of the project is to evaluate the effect of a screening intervention for the early diagnosis and treatment of diabetes complications on health care costs.
Background:
- Diabetes mellitus is a chronic disease that is often associated with serious complications. Detecting early sign of T2D complication is important, however the real-world economic effect of screening are unknown. A statutory health insurance company in Germany has developed a selective contract for early diagnosis and treatment of concomitant diseases of diabetes mellitus; over 30,000 patients have enrolled since the launch of the program in 2015.
Methods:
- We evaluate the effect of the selective contract on outpatient costs, inpatient costs, medication costs and total health care costs over a 3-year post-intervention follow-up. In order to address the selection bias that could potentially happen in the process, both on the physicians level and on the patient level (participation is voluntary), we chose a two stage matching method.
Impact:
- The project will provide insights for the health and economic value of additional screening procedures for the early diagnosis and treatment of diabetes complications delivered in routine care settings.
