Title: Telemedicine monitoring of patients with viral infections, risk prediction to improve resource allocation
Funding Body: Bavarian State Ministry for Healthcare and Nursing
Funding Period: 2023-2024
Partners: Clinic and Polyclinic for Internal Medicine I - Telemedicine Center, Institute for Medical Informatics, Statistics and Epidemiology, MRI; Institute for General Medicine and Health Services Research, Department of Information Technology Management, MRI-TUM
Objectives:
- The overall goal of the project is to improve criteria for the hospitalization of patients with viral infections in Germany. Goal 1 is to establish and improve telemonitoring of patients with viral infection. Goal 2 reduce hospital costs by reducing unnecessary hospitalization of patients.
Background:
- Various viral infections burden the health care system, e.g. Influenza, RSV, Sars-CoV-2, and patient anxiety and uncertainty lead to frequent emergency department contacts. However, there are no standardized criteria for inpatient or outpatient care. This leads to hospitalization of patients, which are “too healthy”, delayed hospitalization of sick patients and frequent hospitalization of nursing home residents. Thus, robust criteria for the hospitalization of patients with viral infections are needed and evaluation of the costs of telemonitoring compared to usual care are necessary.
Methods:
- We will evaluate the telemedical treatment model in comparison to the conventional treatment regarding costs and outcomes.
Impact:
- Telemonitoring will provide important information whether remote monitoring may be a useful extension of care structures to effectively monitor patients at home and improve criteria for hospitalization. If effective this can reduce the number of unnecessary hospitalizations and improve efficiency in the health care system.
