In collaboration with Eimear Dolan, José Areta, Daniel P. Longman and Herman Pontzer, Karsten Köhler Köhler published the article "Energy constraint and compensation: Insights from endurance athletes". The review was conducted in association with the research symposium "Extremes of Energy Balance", hosted by the Professorship of Exercise, Nutrition and Health last November.
The Constrained Model of Total Energy Expenditure suggests that higher physical activity does not significantly increase total energy expenditure. The review examines whether this is true for endurance athletes who expend high amounts of energy during training and competition. It also examines whether inadequate food intake increases energetic stress in some athletes.
