We’re pleased to introduce Dr. Thorben Aussieker as our newest team member. He earned his Bachelor’s degree in Sports Science from the German Sport University Cologne and completed a Master’s degree in Health Sciences at Maastricht University. He went on to pursue his PhD under the supervision of Prof. Luc van Loon, focusing on muscle metabolism. His doctoral research examined the anabolic properties of collagen protein - the most abundant protein in the human body - and its effects on muscle protein metabolism.
Thorben’s research investigates how collagen protein intake influences muscle protein synthesis. He has contributed to several studies using stable isotope tracer methodology to assess muscle protein synthesis rates following the ingestion of various dietary proteins. In addition, he brings valuable methodological expertise in immunohistochemistry and fluorescence microscopy.
At the Technical University of Munich, Thorben will continue exploring the effects of collagen protein on different body tissues. His work aims to deepen our understanding of how collagen can support recovery and health in both athletes and patients.
His position is funded by the TUM Global Postdoc Fellowship Program, which supports international early-career researchers in developing their own independent research projects at TUM.
We’re excited to have him on board and look forward to a productive collaboration!
