On February 9 and 10, the final presentations of the exercise "Nutrition Planning" took place - this year for the first time in a virtual format. The exercise is part of the module "Fundamentals of Nutrition" for the third semester students in the B.Sc. Sports Science program.
Since the beginning of January, the students have been working in small groups on individual nutrition plans for a self-selected athlete. They were accompanied and supported by the lecturers, Prof. Dr. Köhler, Dr. Hofmann, Chaise Murphy and Helena Engel. For the first time this semester, the students had eight real athletes from various fields as "guinea pigs" - including DSV biathletes, ambitious amateur triathletes and cyclists, and a professional soccer player from the 3rd league.
The new format of the "nutrition planning" exercise was very well received from the students' point of view, as the comment by Daniel Oberhuber (B.Sc. student) shows:
"You can't get more practical than this. Working with athletes in real case studies as part of the nutrition planning seminar was very interesting because the theoretical content from the lecture could be applied directly. The challenge was to concentrate on the essentials and, depending on the prerequisites and possibilities of the athlete, to formulate realistic approaches together with him/her to achieve the set goals. Many thanks to Prof. Dr. Köhler and his team for this offer and the knowledge and experience gained through it, as well as the support in nutritional counseling."
The participating athletes were also enthusiastic:
"From my point of view, the students approached this excellently and provided concrete, implementable and realistic nutritional recommendations. From there, high praise and thank you for the opportunity to participate."
Out of a total of 42 presentations, the presentations on "Powerlifting" (Group 8: Adam, Büttgen, Simonetti, Mächler) stood out in particular. Jawan Simonetti of the winning team was pleased with the award, but also with the experience:
"Creating a nutrition plan not only translates theoretical knowledge into practical skills, but also educates the student in the context of nutrition science, as an applied science."
Second place went to the team "Vegan Triathlete" (Group 32: Schilcher, Scheibenberger, Carste, Schlau).
Thanks to all for the successful presentations and congratulations to all winners.
