This was a two-week program in May that brought researchers and experts in the field together to talk about human rights in mega sporting events. During the two weeks over 35 PhD students and more senior academics attended. Having many people together who are passionate around the same topic allowed for some very interesting and lively talks which included benefits of the bidding process, stigma of the games, using virtual reality in sporting event venues, mega events and climate change, social justice and equity, abuse on social media, safe sports, and sustainability. The event also hosted workshops regarding research methods, ethical considerations, mobilizing knowledge and disseminating work beyond academia.
Additionally, PhD students were also given the opportunity to present their thesis and receive feedback from other academics. This allowed for a broader perspective to be gained and insights that may not have yet been considered – which is invaluable at any stage of research.
Spending two weeks in a training school also called for some downtime. There were informal gatherings, attending ice hockey and basketball games and getting to know the delights of Ontario like Niagara Falls. Overall, a fantastic opportunity for global networking and research collaborations.
