Mega-sport event stakeholders have sought to enshrine progressive and ethical principles, protocols and practices into the governance arrangements for the events. In response, the International Olympic Committee (IOC), the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA), and the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF), to name a few, have each made their own commitments to incorporate explicit human rights policies within their activities, including the bidding, planning and delivery of their MSEs. Yet, forced evictions of residents during event preparations and gentrification, abuse of migrant labour in the construction of event facilities, lack of freedom of media and press, political repression, lack of democratic participation of vulnerable stakeholder groups in decision-making processes, and lack of freedom of opinion and expression for both athletes and non-athletes have been commonly reported in the context of mega-sport events.
The online symposium is the opportunity for TUM Students to actively participate in the discussion (either in connection to a module offered at TUM, or without such connection) and by attending the sessions, which will be held via Zoom. Students are expected to work in groups (three persons each) to prepare the debates before to the symposium. At TUM, students from the M.Sc. Sport and Exercise Science will take part in the debates as part of the module “Current social and political topics of sport in global societies.
TUM students can apply to participate until October 30, 2020. Please send an email to info.mgt(at)sg.tum.de. We are looking forward to receiving your registration.
