The lectures and exercises in connection to the modules gave the students the opportunity to gain important knowledge and insights into start-ups. The students were introduced in the most important topics when starting their own business and how they can manage it. In doing so, they were taught what it means to be an entrepreneur and how entrepreneurs think. They were also shown which methods can be used to develop an own business idea, which strategies start-ups and companies can pursue to exploit (new) markets, and how to plan the founding and funding of a new business.
Development of an own business idea
In the corresponding seminar the students applied their knowledge and worked out their
own business idea. They explained their idea as concretely as possible in a poster and video. In the process, the students from both sport and health sciences came up with a variety of interesting and exciting ideas. Many of these ideas deal with current topics in the field of sport and health management and have large market potential. To give the students a better feeling for what is possible and how to create an own product, the students visited the MakerSpace in Garching (a high-tech prototype workshop).
Winner pitches
On 3 February 2020 the eight best groups (four health and sports science student groups each) were given the opportunity to pitch their business idea. The posters and videos of the winners were presented to a wider audience. The two winners from the health scientists convinced with their idea of the "Health Cabinet" – a digital health cabinet with an integrated refrigerator compartment, which gives an overview of the available medications and can tell which medications fit together – and "Von Stein zu Stein" – a board game for children, which playfully introduces topics such as sustainability, health and physical activity. Among the sport scientists, the "B.M.I." group idea, which has developed an exciting sport program for children (3-6 years) to increase their physical activity, was rated to be most convincing.
Preparation of a business plan in the Existenzgründerseminar
The students also have the opportunity to further work on their idea. In the elective course "Existenzgründerseminar", the students, together with their group partners, but also alone, can write a business plan for their business idea. This first step into the startup world will motivate many students to continue working on their idea and to start their own business within or after their studies.
