This year’s Summer School was held in the beautiful Fynbos Retreat near Cape Town, South Africa, from the 11th to the 18th of March 2016. The program was dedicated to give interdisciplinary feedback to ongoing research and to equip researchers with better understanding of paper review and publication process. Besides having participants presenting their own projects and review each other’s paper, the program also entailed keynote speeches from Jörg Königstorfer (TUM) "Review processes in scientific journals: An overview" and Prof. Martin Lames (TUM) "What is applied research and how can reviewers of scientific journals be convinced by the value of applied research studies" and a panel discussion led by Jason Bocarro (NC State) "Publications that matter! A critical perspective on publishing in scientific journals."
Participants also took part in numerous extra-curricular activities around the magnificent retreat and were able to experience first-hand the works of the local Grootbos Foundation, which aims to develop sustainable livelihoods through tourism and sport. PhD students participated in team building activities via football and a river boat cruise, they went hiking, visited a township in the community, visited the Cape Epic (a popular mountain bike race), and some even went cage diving with white sharks - everyone enjoyed these activities and made new friends at the Summer School.
The CARNIVAL project is EU-funded and focuses on the legacy of mega-sporting events. In addition to the Department of Sport & Health Management, North Carolina State University (Raleigh, United States), Cape Peninsula University of Technology (Cape Town, South Africa), Coventry University (Coventry, England), and Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) are involved in the project. The Summer School was financed by the CARNIVAL project and by the TUM Graduate School.
