Experience climate action together through play: A toolbox for families
Summary
The educational project is aimed at the target group of families. The core objective is to strengthen families' ability to participate in climate action. For this purpose, a family toolbox is being developed and made available in print format, online, and as an app. After that, it will be disseminated by multipliers. The toolbox will contain a collection of play-based activities that encourage families to be physically active in their neighborhood while dealing with topics of education for sustainable development.
Background
In order to achieve the political goals for joint climate action, innovative approaches are needed that enable all people to participate in the transformation of our society. At the latest during the Covid-19 pandemic, it became clear that not only schools and educational institutions serve as learning spaces, but that private, family spaces can and should also fulfill educational tasks. Therefore, families should be empowered with suitable tools to create learning opportunities and their competence to act for climate action should be strengthened.
Aim of the project
The project "raus!" Experience climate action together through play" deals with developing, piloting, and publishing a free collection of methods and games for families. By combining education for sustainable development (ESD) with green exercise or exercise in the neighborhood environment, the project pursues various goals:
- Strengthening the competence of action for climate protection of parents and children.
- Strengthening the mediation competence of parents in the field of climate protection.
- Enabling multipliers to communicate the program.
- Increasing the activity level and health promotion of families.
Working process
- Participatory development of the family toolbox: a comprehensive collection of educational offers prepared in a playful way, which encourages families to independently be active outdoors in their neighborhood environment and to deal with climate action-relevant topics (e.g. transport, consumption, energy use).
- Testing and accompanied piloting with families: at least 20 families are recruited who are willing to participate in the testing and further development of the toolbox. Their feedback will be used to optimize the toolbox, and the offer's climate protection effect will be evaluated.
- Provision: The toolbox is made available in print format, online for free download, and as a smartphone app. This takes the different usage behavior of the target group into account.
- Dissemination and multiplier work: several workshops with different multiplier groups will take place and the toolbox will be disseminated through different channels, e.g. publications and workshops.
Time horizon
The project is funded by the German Federal Ministry of Economics and Climate Protection as part of the "Nationale Klimaschutzinitiative (NKI)” with a funding period of 3 years (duration: 04/2023-03/2026).
The project is a cooperation between the Technical University of Munich and the University of Konstanz and is supported by practice partners.
