EMMA Translation
Summary
The current EMMA-Translation project is a continuation and expansion of the activities in the EMMA project, which primarily aimed at the development, piloting, and evaluation of workplace health management measures for home care services: Subproject 1 (comprehensive needs analysis), Subproject 2 (development and evaluation of implementation) and Subproject 3 (evaluation of effectiveness). The EMMA project's findings, measures, and implementation strategies will now be made available to home care services across Germany through MEHRWERT:PFLEGE (a service by vdek). The translation of the EMMA model project into a routine offering via MEHRWERT:PFLEGE will be (1) scientifically monitored and (2) facilitated through the empowerment of trainers (Train-the-Trainer concept) as part of this project expansion.
Background
Currently, home care is the fastest-growing sector in long-term care. The demand for home care workers already exceeds the number of available workers on the job market. Therefore, attracting and retaining employees in home care is one of the biggest future challenges in the long-term care sector. Making home care a health-promoting workplace, to attract new care workers and keep existing ones healthy and in the profession for as long as possible, is a societal concern. However, concepts and measures for workplace health promotion and management (WHP/WHM) that address the specific working conditions of home care are lacking internationally. Against this background, the EMMA project series was designed as a cooperative project between TUM and vdek.
Aim of the project
To implement the workplace health promotion and management (WHP/WHM) measures and processes developed in the EMMA project into the care practices of home care services in Germany, the EMMA-Translation project employs two strategies with the following objectives:
Development and Evaluation of a Train-the-Trainer Concept
This aims to empower consultants and trainers to qualitatively implement the measures and processes from the previous EMMA project in home care facilities. The evaluation focuses on assessing the training concept's feasibility and effectiveness in terms of “changes in the learners.”
Evaluation of the Dissemination of Measures
This involves assessing the spread of the measures in home care facilities through the MEHRWERT:PFLEGE offering by vdek, with particular attention to the implementation outcomes of reach and penetration.
Implementation
Development and Implementation of a Train-the-Trainer Training Concept
The training concept is developed and implemented in close collaboration between staff from TUM and the external partner Team Gesundheit. The development of the training concept is preceded by a multi-perspective needs assessment of learning objectives. This assessment includes the perspectives of all involved stakeholders: (1) future training participants, (2) home care service facilities where EMMA project measures were implemented, (3) individuals who have already implemented the measures developed in the EMMA project in home care, (4) the development team from the EMMA project (TUM and Team Gesundheit), and (5) the Verband der Ersatzkassen as the funding body for future measure implementations.
Evaluation of the Train-the-Trainer Training Concept
The IMTEE (Integrated Model of Training Evaluation and Effectiveness) is the evaluation model that is used. This model combines variables of training evaluation with the assessment of training effectiveness for a comprehensive evaluation of training in the workplace. IMTEE includes three levels of training evaluation: (1) "Reaction" - reactions to the training content and design, (2) "Changes in Learners" - changes in the learners, and (3) "Organizational Payoffs" - benefits for the organization.
Time horizon
The project has a duration of 1.5 years, running from October 1, 2023, until March 31, 2025, and is funded by the Verband der Ersatzkassen e.V. (vdek).
