At TU Munich, diversity can be found on many different levels - in terms of age, gender, culture, language, health, ethnic origin, sexual orientation or religion. For the Department of Sport and Health Sciences (SG), the topic of diversity is a core concern. Since 2013, there has therefore been an annual Diversity Report, which has now been published for the ninth time.
"This time, the Diversity Report has three focal points," explains Andrea Göttler, the Departments's Diversity Officer. "Firstly, the focus is on 'diversity in all policies', i.e. how to implement diversity in all areas of the Department. The long-term goal must be that diversity is always included. The second focus is the issue of diversity during the Corona pandemic. Despite COVID-19, equal opportunities must not be left behind during the pandemic, which is why events were implemented virtually or, for example, the Diversity Day 2021 digitally. And the third focus is on the prevention of sexualised violence, a topic we already highlighted last year. Here we want to achieve even more visibility at the Department, especially also at the new TUM campus in the Olympiapark, which must be a safe place for everyone."
Research was conducted in 26 diversity-related projects at the Department. In addition, two collaborations with the TUM SEED Center and the School of Medicine of the "Instituto Tecnológico y de Estudios Superiores de Monterrey - Campus Ciudad de México" took place in 2021. 16 journal articles, one book, three book contributions and three research reports were published. In addition, nine conferences, workshops and events in the field of diversity took place. In the winter semester 2020/21, 22 diversity-related courses were offered, and in the summer semester 2021 there were as many as 27. In addition, a diversity event was held for doctoral students of the former Chair of Sociology of Diversity. Furthermore, a total of seven international guest researchers were invited to the Department in this subject area.
"These numbers prove once again that the entire Department is characterized by a high level of commitment in the area of diversity," says Göttler. "This includes the Diversity Report on the one hand, but also the Diversity Prize for theses, which is awarded annually as part of the Absolvia celebration."
The Diversity Prize 2021 was awarded to Manuel Levin Gaiser (Bachelor's thesis), Alina Sophie Müller (admission thesis) and Marie Wiethaler (Master's thesis) at the online Absolvia 2021. They each received 500 Euros in prize money.
Gifty Baffour Awuah, Master's student at TUM, was awarded the DAAD Prize for Outstanding Achievement by International Students at German Universities in recognition of her academic success and contribution to society. The prize is endowed with 1,000 Euros.
As the compatibility of study/work and family is a central focus of the Department's gender equality efforts, the family-friendly offers have been continuously expanded. Among other things, flexible childcare is offered on request for events, conferences, meetings or official appointments that fall outside the regular childcare hours. Furthermore, it is possible to borrow a mobile KidsBox, which enables parents to look after their offspring at the workplace in the event of a short-term childcare shortfall, illness or during holiday periods. This KidsBox is a mobile parent-child room that contains toys for babies and children up to primary school age and also offers sleeping and nappy-changing facilities.
