Dr. José Areta, Lecturer in Sports Nutrition and Metabolism at the School of Sport and Exercise Sciences at Liverpool John Moores University, will spend ten days from July 7, 2022 as a visiting professor at the Assistant Professorship of Exercise, Nutrition and Health headed by Prof. Dr. Karsten Köhler as part of the TUM Global Visiting Professor Program.
During his visit at the Department of Sport and Health Sciences, Dr. Areta will give a guest lecture on the topic "From Muscle Protein Synthesis to Skeletal Muscly Glycogen and Low Energy Availability: An Ongoing Career in Sports Nutrition Research" on Monday, July 11, 2022, from 5 to 6 PM in Lecture Hall 2 of the TUM Campus in the Olympic Park.
In this Research Seminar, Dr. Areta will provide an overview of his previous research, which he is now continuing as a lecturer in Sports Nutrition. His focus relates to the study of the physiological effects of energy deficits in humans.
"I am very excited about the TUM Global Visiting Professor Program fellowship and the opportunity to get to know the university better and deepen my links to Prof. Köhler," said Dr. Areta. "It is a fantastic opportunity for my university to collaborate with TUM. The two universities are leaders in the field of sports nutrition, and I know that this field of research is also growing in Germany. In this respect, it is great that I can share some of the things we are working on here in Liverpool with the TUM staff and students, not only in terms of sports nutrition in general, but also in terms of my research in particular, which is very much based on what Prof. Köhler and his team are researching. "
Originally trained as a biologist (with a minor in zoology), Dr. Areta first became involved with the topic of sports nutrition during his doctorate at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (Australia). In doing so, he investigated the effects of dietary protein and strength training on muscle protein synthesis.
While a postdoctoral fellow at the Norwegian School of Sport Sciences in Oslo, Norway, he researched the effects of exercise and diet on skeletal muscle glycogen content.
The main interest in his studies is the interactions between exercise and nutrients in humans. Thus, he analyzes how the intake of carbohydrates, fat and protein can be manipulated during exercise to optimize physical performance and health.
"It is, of course, a wonderful honor that Dr. Areta's visit has been approved as part of the TUM Global Visiting Professor Program," explains Prof. Köhler. "I work very closely with Dr. Areta and recently gave a tutorial lecture together with him at the American College of Sports Medicine Congress, the largest sports medicine congress in the world, and will also be a guest speaker at a symposium in Liverpool in September."
The TUM Global Visiting Professor Program offers the opportunity to recruit excellent professors from international partner universities for temporary teaching and research collaborations and thus to promote the internationalization of TUM. In particular, this is intended to promote work on the initiation or further development of joint research activities.
