High recognition for Prof. Dr. Ansgar Schwirtz: The Emeritus of Associate Professorship of Biomechanics in Sports was re-elected President of the German Association for Sport Science (dvs) on September 18, 2025, during the 27th Sportwissenschaftlicher Hochschultag at the University of Münster. With his re-election, he continues his successful term of office, which will now run until 2027.
“I am very pleased about the trust placed in me by the members and look forward to the coming two years with great motivation. At the same time, in my function as President, I am committed to close networking between science, practice and society, from which the Department Health and Sport Sciences will certainly also benefit,” says Prof. Schwirtz.
Since his first election in 2017, Prof. Schwirtz has significantly shaped the strategic and science policy orientation of the dvs. Under his leadership, central topics of sport science have been continuously advanced: “It is an important concern of mine to position sport science even more strongly and publicly in the future and to make the successes and results of our research visible.
In addition, we would like to strengthen membership numbers for the future – also within our Department Health and Sport Sciences I see a need to catch up here – and to secure the locations of sport science in the long term, as is currently the case, for example, with the sport science institutes in Bremen or Darmstadt."
Among his further goals, Schwirtz also counts: “In central institutions, I am committed to close cooperation, for example with the Federal Institute of Sport Science (BISp) or the Deutscher Olympischer Sportbund (DOSB), which we support in their Olympic bid. In addition, we would like to promote concrete projects and topics: It is important to me that the succession of former BISp Director Andrea Schumacher will in future be taken over by a sport scientist.
Furthermore, we want to make targeted use of the momentum of the next Hochschultag in Bayreuth to further strengthen sport science in Bavaria and to expand its visibility at the university locations in the Free State,” explains Prof. Schwirtz in conclusion.
