42,204 square meters of floor space, 300 offices, 15 diagnostic rooms, 14 sports halls, 12 lecture halls and 5 workshops will be included in the new building of the campus in the Olympic Park (CiO) of the Technical University of Munich. In total, the Free State of Bavaria will be investing a total of around 160 million euros for this. On Tuesday, May 21, 2019, the roofing ceremony for the first construction phase was celebrated. Both the Munich newspaper, Abendzeitung, and Munich.TV reported on this.
The building was designed by the architectural office of Dietrich/Untertrifaller in Bregenz as a building made of wood and glass. For Bavaria's Minister of Construction, Hans Reichhart, the 185-meter-long and 153-meter-wide building combines a variety of the Bavarian State Building Administration's guiding principles: "The new building will be particularly important in many ways. Not only does it fit perfectly into the unique architecture of the Olympic Park. It is also energy-saving, since up to 80 percent of it is made of wood. This is not a common occurrence in such a large building and represents our desire in saving building materials and resources. We consider the building culture and quality to be of great importance."
Welcoming Address from the TUM Chancellor Albert Berger
In his welcoming address, TUM Chancellor Albert Berger emphasized the future importance of the new construction. "With this fascinating and functional construction, we are well equipped for the future and we can effectively address the topics of sport and health, as well as prevention and rehabilitation here, which are among the mega-topics of our time, in both research and in education."
The new building creates numerous new opportunities for the faculty. "The new building is imposing and also very lively due to its wood construction. Thanks to the glass fronts, which allow a view into both the seminar rooms and the gyms, the combination of theory and practice is presented in a special way. At the same time, approachability to the sports facilities as well as to the park invites you to take part in physical activity, which is an enormously important factor for lasting health in life," says the Dean, Prof. Dr. Renate Oberhoffer.
The new building is to be completed by 2023. Construction will take place in two phases. Presently, the sports halls are being constructed. These should already be in operation by the summer semester 2020. After that, the existing gyms will be broken away and the remaining parts of the building will be completed by mid-2023.
