Frankfurt 29.09.2016. – This year the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Prävention und Rehabilitation von Herz-Kreislauferkrankungen e.V. (DGPR) and the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Sportmedizin und Prävention (DGSP) gave their joint meeting in Frankfurt. Prof. Wackerhage was invited by Prof Wilhelm Bloch to present on Sarcopenia at the Goethe University of Frankfurt within the scope of the 47th Congress of Sports medicine. Actually, Prof. Dr. Martin Halle (Head of Preventive and Rehabilitative Sports Medicine at the TUM) was one of the organisers so the TUM flag was flying high! Sarcopenia is the normal loss of muscle mass and function during normal ageing. It is an important problem for the German society as it is ageing on average. Sarcopenia is important in this context because if the elderly maintain their muscle mass and strength then they are more likely to be independent and are less likely to fall. In his talk, Prof. Wackerhage discussed the causes such as the loss of motoneurons and muscle fibres, anabolic resistance (old muscle responds less to growth signals) and the role of muscle stem cells, termed satellite cells. With all of these causes there are caveats though. Furthermore, Prof. Wackerhage discussed recommendations for exercise, feeding, and potential drug treatments.
