Since November 2021, Orkan Okan is Head of the newly established Assistant Professorship of Health Literacy at the Department of Sport and Health Sciences at Technical University of Munich. Previously, he was a Post Doc at the Interdisciplinary Centre for Health Literacy Research at the Faculty of Educational Science at Bielefeld University.
Orkan Okan is a trained teacher as he studied teaching at the University of Duisburg-Essen, with a particular focus on teaching in elementary school. His subjects include German language, social sciences (economics, geography, history, sociology), educational science / pedagogy and mathematics. He holds the First State Examination in educational science and received his PhD in educational science from Bielefeld University in 2020 on the topic of "Health Literacy in Childhood and Adolescence". Since 2015, he has been project manager of the BMBF funded research consortium HLCA, which he is coordinating since 2022.
His research focuses on health literacy as well as health promotion in childhood and adolescence with a particular focus on schools and education. He is co-editor of the books "International Handbook of Health Literacy" (Policy Press Bristol), "New Approaches to Health Literacy" (Springer VS) and "Reference Work Health Literacy" (Springer). Since 2019 he is member of the editorial board of Health Promotion International.
He is member of several national and international associations and netwokrs. Since 2016 he is Vice President of the Health Promotion Section of the European Public Health Association (EUPHA), since 2019 he is Deputy Chair of the Global Working Group on Health Literacy of the International Union for Health Promotion and Education (IUHPE) and since 2020 Chair of the Interest Group Health Literacy in Schools of the International Health Literacy Association (IHLA). He has been a member of IHLA's Standing Committee for Policy and Advocacy since 2018 and a member of the Unesco Chair Global Health and Education since 2019. Orkan is also a founding member of the FRESH Working Group on Health Literacy at the International School Health Network (SHE) and a member of the Schools for Health in Europe Network Foundation (SHE) Research Group. He is a founding member of the Working Group Health Literacy at the World Health Organization (WHO) Europe and lead on the project to develop the WHO International Global Health Literacy Measurement. In 2020, he founded the Alliance Health Literacy and Schools with colleagues from Fulda University of Applied Sciences, Helmholtz Munich and Hertie School. Since 2020, he and colleagues have coordinated the global research network Covid-HL and the Global Alliance for Health Literacy in Schools.
