The “European Week of Sport” (EWoS) is a European Commission initiative to promote sport and physical activity throughout Europe. It was first launched in 2015 and takes place annually in September. The overall campaign theme “#BeActive” is intended to encourage all participants to be active during the week, but also to do sports all year round. It aims to encourage participation in sport and physical activities as well as raising awareness of its many benefits. Last year, 42 European countries participated with 28,300 events and around 15.3 million participants.
The “Outdoor against cancer - move yourself, go out and live” project, in short “OAC: mygoal”, organized by the Chair of Preventive Pediatrics headed by Prof. Dr. Renate Oberhoffer-Fritz, will once again take part with an event in this year's EWoS taking place from 23 to 30 September 2020. On Thursday, 24 September 2020, a hike through the Isar valley will take place for people suffering from cancer, their family members and friends to promote the topic of exercise in the context of cancer. A night walk in the Olympic Park has already been held last year.
“It is particularly important for us to help put people in touch with one another. And what makes it so special is that not only cancer patients can take part in the walk, but also family members and friends,” explains project coordinator Dr. Hande Hofmann, who works as a Research Associate at the Professorship for Exercise, Nutrition and Health since July 2019.
The meeting place will be at 4 PM at the car park at the Isar bridge near Grünwald, the event begins at 4:30 PM. The route is about 7.4 kilometres long and is also suitable for beginners. The hike takes about two and a half hours to complete. “In the meantime, we will make a few stops with training sessions,” explains Dr. Hofmann.
In addition to solid footwear, participants are requested to bring their own food. After the hike, participants can enjoy a group visit to the beer garden. Participation is free of charge. Places are still available and can be obtained via registration on the “OAC:mygoal” project homepage.
