kidsTUMove-Sommercamp 2022

05.10.22
“TIME TRAVEL”
A FACT THAT WE MAKE EVERY DAY!
32 children and adolescents aged between 6 and 17 met on 08.08.2022 on the fantastic grounds of the kids to life foundation in Unterhaching for the start of the one-week KidsTUMove Summer Camp 2022. A group of students from the Faculty of Sports and Health Sciences of the Technical University of Munich welcomed the participants with a varied program: the week was all about time travel and so the children and young people experienced adventures in the world of the Vikings, the Middle Ages, the cowboys and Indians and outer space every day. Sports scientists, paediatricians and specially trained instructors are present at the kidsTUMove offers for the targeted promotion, care and safety of the individual children and adolescents.
THE WEEK IN OVERVIEW
Sporting strength and balance were gathered on the wild sea with the boards during stand-up paddling on Lake Starnberg, skill and rhythm were tried out during rock “n roll and various sports, such as spikeball or tennis, could be experienced in the journey through time.
Even quiet moments have not been neglected. With a morning round of yoga or a wellness evening including a dream trip to the Wild West, all children and young people were able to relax and feel themselves. In the evenings there was a wide variety of programs, from board games to live music. To crown it all, a space party including a talent show was held on the last evening.
THE GREAT CONCLUSION SHOW
After six eventful days of camp everyone was exhausted but happily picked up again. Before the paths parted for the first time, the parents were also shown a small excerpt of the talent show.
Overall, the camp was again a great success, with many smiling and happy faces, a lot of sweat, movement and action. The participants came back from the time travel at the camp strengthened, with a lot of self-confidence, new friends and experiences – positively tuned for upcoming challenges in family life and motivated for further journeys in the future!
Women underrepresented in top positions: Leopoldina makes recommendations for gender-sensitive science
28.09.2022
Science in Germany is still dominated by men – especially in senior positions at universities and non-university research institutions. The emigration of women begins after graduation and is at the expense of the scientific system, which loses diversity and creativity. The statement “Women in Science: Developments and Recommendations” published today by the National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina identifies the reasons for the persistent underrepresentation of women and formulates measures to counteract it. Background:
June is all about the rainbow. Pride Month celebrates the colourful diversity of our society and many cities and municipalities also draw attention to the topic in June with events, actions and by hoisting rainbow flags at city halls. Pride Month goes back to the LGBTQ movement, which began to organise in the 1960s. "Pride expresses the feeling of being confident about one's sexual orientation and accepting and celebrating difference rather than seeing it as a burden. The highlight of Pride Month is the big parades and processions on Christopher Street Day (CSD).

Domestic violence during the coronavirus pandemic
10.06.2020
Around 3 percent of women in Germany were subject to physical violence at home during the strict lockdown period and 3.6 percent were raped by their partner. In 6.5 percent of all households, children were subjected to violent forms of punishment. These are some of the results of the first major representative survey on domestic violence during the coronavirus pandemic. In cases where women were in quarantine or families suffered from financial insecurity, the figures were significantly higher. Only a very small percentage of the women concerned made use of support services.
Janina Steinert, Professor of Global Health at the Technical University of Munich (TUM) and Dr. Cara Ebert of the RWI – Leibniz Institute for Economic Research, therefore conducted an online survey on the experiences of around 3,800 women between the ages of 18 and 65. The study is representative for Germany in terms of age, education, income, household size and place of residence. The women were asked about the preceding month between April 22 and May 8 2020, i.e. the period in which the strictest social distancing rules were in effect. To address the possibility that some of the respondents might be too embarrassed to give truthful answers, the researchers used a recognized method of indirect questioning for highly stigmatized forms of violence, e.g. sexual violence.
Diversity Day 2020: Summary of the first Diversity Talk
On 26 May, the eighth Diversity Day was held throughout Germany, which is organised every year by the "Diversity Charter" initiative. This event aims to set an example of diversity and successful cooperation. The Department of Sports and Health Sciences participated this year with a diversity podcast on the topic of Trans* and Inter*. In response to the corona restrictions, the event was organized as an online podcast. The diversity officer, Andrea Göttler, spoke with Ann Kristin Augst from Augsburg University and Severin Böhmer and Paul Oppenrieder of the Diversity & Queer section of the TUM student representation.
To start the conversation, Ms Augst defined trans* and inter* and reported on her research. Her doctoral thesis centres on gender diversity in medicine and the German health care system. Early results suggest that trans* and inter* individuals face barriers on various levels, e.g. during interactions with receptionists, doctors or health insurances. Ann Kristin Augst explained that this could lead to "people who have had bad experiences [...] then simply try to go to the doctor as little as possible”. She drew attention to structural hurdles that can arise, for example, in access to gynaecological care for trans* people. Ann Kristin Augst, therefore, stressed the importance of gender competence - the ability to recognise and reflect on relevant gender aspects and to act towards the goal of gender equality - especially in the health care system.
Talking to Paul Oppenrieder and Severin Böhmer revealed that challenges related to gender diversity are also visible in university life. The Diversity & Queer section of the TUM student representation supports students with any diversity- or queer-issues and draws attention to difficulties related to the university setting. With projects – e.g. gender-neutral toilets – they advocate gender equality inside the university. During the talk, they pointed out the challenges of changing one’s name on student files, which can lead to having to come out repeatedly to teachers.
During the discussion, all participants emphasized that the visibility of gender diversity should be promoted more strongly. Severin Böhmer explained: "We have also noticed that often discriminatory statements are not necessarily meant to be discriminatory, but that there is often a lot of unawareness behind them". Informing people and making gender diversity more visible could thereby result in better and more respectful social interactions. Overall, the podcast gave listeners the opportunity to learn about trans* and inter* people and to get to know the existing barriers at university and in the health care system.

First Diversity Talk in celebration of Diversity Day: Gender diversity in the German health system and at university
25.05.2020
26.05.2020 | Online
For this year's Diversity Day, the Department of Sports and Health Sciences takes a closer look at topics related to Trans * and Inter *. The diversity officer, Andrea Göttler, speaks with Ann Kristin Augst from Augsburg University and Severin Böhmer and Paul Oppenrieder of the Diversity & Queer section of the TUM student representation.
Ms. Augst reports on her research on trans and inter persons in the German health care system. Next, Mr. Böhmer and Mr. Oppenrieder give an insight into the work of the student representation and present which challenges inter und trans students may face during their studies. Finally, we reflect on the significance of these issues for the Department of Sports and Health Sciences.
It needs to be noted, that this is an extensive topic that could not be discussed in all its complexity in a first conversation. Therefore, this event is intended to encourage further discussion and conversations. We want to invite our listeners to join the discussion with the speakers. Via Tweedback (session ID: ppwp) you can ask further questions, pass on suggestions or report on your own experiences. The talk is recorded in German, however, we will provide an English summary in the following days and you can join the Tweedback conversation in English as well.

Workshop "Diversity in studying and teaching"
This year, in celebration of the annual diversity day of the "Diversity Charta", the department organized the event "Diversity in studying and teaching". In collaboration with ProLehre, we offered a workshop for both students and teachers to reflect on the dimensions of diversity in university settings. Participants had the opportunity discuss their perspectives as students or teachers and develop possible solutions to deal with differences.
Through presentations and group work, students, teacher and PhD candidates gathered ideas on the characteristics and relevance of diversity. This was followed by further discussions on the occurrence in university life and the challenges to address the diversity of students in Sport and Health Sciences. Furthermore, tips and methods for designing and implementing diversity-appropriate teaching were developed and discussed. By the end of the event, many ideas were gathered, leading up to a feedback round summarizing current challenges and areas for improvement.
The aim of the event was to reflect on how different aspects of diversity might occur in daily life and how to address them as student or teacher. It was equally important to find practicable solutions to current problems regarding the treatment of diversity, be it in lectures or in every university life.
More information on topics and results of the event as well as further links can be found in the slide report of the workshop.

Women in TV Sports - with sport show moderator Julia Scharf as a guest
"Women in television sports journalism certainly have it easier today than in the past," states Julia Scharf when considering the gender ratio in the media, although she supplements this idea explaining, "With appropriate competence and the absolute desire to enter the profession as a sports journalist, gender does not play a role."On Dec. 01, 2015, within the framework of the lecture on "Sports journalism", the moderator of the ARD Sport show discussed the developments and current trends in sport journalism with Prof. Dr. Michael Schaffrath and subsequently addressed questions from the group of around 100 students.
Career summary
Julia Scharf completed her diploma in the sport sciences with a focus on media and communication in 2006, which was followed by voluntary services performed with the newspaper group Münchner Merkur/tz, before working as a moderator and field reporter for Sport 1. Since 2011, she has hosted various magazine programs in the SWR and works as a reporter and interviewer for the ARD, among other things for the winter sports program. She has been a moderator for the ARD Sport show on Saturdays since 2014. Such a compelling CV suggests a well-thought-out and targeted career planning. However, Scharf admits: "When I took my first steps in sports journalism, I would never have thought that I would be a moderator for the Sport show. I believe that you cannot really set such a goal. One has to be realistic."
Tips for students
A college degree is now mandatory for almost any professional journalistic activity. "A bachelor's degree is the minimum!" You must then individually decide whether a master's degree makes sense. "If you have already completed many internships and then have a chance to work as a fixed or free employee to start your career, you should take advantage of this opportunity," recommends Scharf. One of the most important criteria for qualification in sports journalism is experience, this is true for men as well as for women. This 34-year-old naturally has a broad knowledge in different sports as well. Optics also plays a certain role in television. "This media thrives on the optics! However, it should not be seen as the most important criterion."
Challenge - the live interview
In response to the question from the circle of students regarding why interviews on television often have a rather little significance, the Sport show host pointed out the difficulty of the situation. "In soccer, for example, there is almost always only 90 seconds. There is no time for in-depth analysis. In addition, the players frequently respond with very run-of-the-mill statements." In interviews, you should also always consider that this should not be the last conversation with the athletes in front of the camera. Therefore, the limits for critical inquiries are very tight - especially in the case of soccer.
Diversity in the universities
On January 27, 2016 at 04:00 p.m., the TUM Department of Sport and Health Sciences held a specialized afternoon on the topic of "Diversity in the universities: Research, experience and development". Detailed information can be found in the Program flyer.
Presentation of the first Diversity Prize from the Department for Sport and Health Sciences

In the course of the Absolvia, the graduation ceremony by the Faculty for Sport and Health Sciences, a Diversity prize was awarded for the first time on February 13, 2015 for diversity-related final scientific dissertations.
Encouragement of the scientific debate about diversity
With this prize, the faculty would like to accentuate the significance of the topic of diversity and to promote a scientific debate in this field, especially in relationship to the topics of sport and health.
1. price: Dr. Laura Dobusch
Dr. Laura Dobusch, a scientific staff member from the Chair of Diversity Sociology (Prof. Dr. Elisabeth Wacker), was very convincing with her thesis on the topic of "Diversity Limited - Inclusion, Exclusion and Strategies of Demarcation through the Aid of Diversity Management Practices". Her thesis was awarded first place and thereby won the cash prize of 1000 euros.
2. price: Dr. Claudia Kern
The second place thesis, with an award of 500 euros, came from Dr. Claudia Kern, a scientific staff member from the Chair of Preventive Pediatrics (Prof. Dr. Renate Oberhoffer). In the course of her thesis, she developed a therapeutic climbing program for patients with multiple sclerosis and subsequently evaluated the effects of this program.
3. price: Andrea Standecker
Andrea Standecker was awarded third place with her bachelor thesis. She worked on the development of learning modules for the Special Olympics in Germany - presented in relation to healthy athletes as an example (Counselor: Dr. Daniela Schwarz).
The Diversity Prize is an action for the Overall Diversity Concept from the Faculty for Sport and Health Sciences. It provides a clear sign both internally and externally for the strengthening of diversity-specific contents.
The TUM Department of Sport and Health Sciences has recently acquired a mobile nursery, the so-called KidsBox. This mobile box contains toys for babies and pre-school children, and offers sleeping opportunities and diaper-changing facilities. Additionally, there is a First-Aid Set available for smaller emergencies.
The KidsBox is absolutely flexible, it has very stable, easy-roll wheels and can be transported to other rooms or buildings without any problems. For brief periods of care, in the event of illness or during marginal times, for example, the staff member involved has a chance to care for their child at their place of work in order to ensure urgent working procedures or to participate in important appointments.
In addition, the KidsBox can be used to care for the children of participants for internal faculty events and meetings. This represents a further step toward uniting occupation or course of studies and the family, which is a part of the TUM Department of Sport and Health Sciences.
The KidsBox is available for students and staff members with children and can be used by prior appointment.
