In January 2024, Germany will host the EHF European Men's Indoor Handball Championship, organized by the European Handball Federation (EHF), including matches in Munich's Olympic Hall.
On Sunday, 14 January 2024, the EHF Grassroots Convention 2024 will take place at the TUM Campus at the Olympic Park (CiO). The event was initiated by the EHF together with the Associate Professorship of Didactics in Sport and Health, namely by Prof. Dr. Filip Mess and Ben Schulze, and is a supporting program to the European Handball Championships taking place at the same time.
"With this supporting program, we can simultaneously provide important impulses in the theory-practice relationship as an absolute top sporting event. We are very pleased that the EHF is organizing this event at the TUM and hope this will lead to even stronger networking between science and sports practice," explains Prof. Mess.
The congress aims to bring together various stakeholders, primarily from the field of children's and school handball, in order to discuss the latest developments, initiatives, and innovations in the field of grassroots handball: "The question of how a sport gains members has occupied handball for a long time. Whether it's through schools or the introduction of innovative forms of play, handball is taking an innovative approach with this exchange format," explains Schulze.
Over 25 speakers - from top experts and keynote speakers from the world of handball to presentations from coaching, education, and child protection - will present their best-practice examples and much more. The following speakers have been announced:
- Folker Hellmund - Director of the EOC EU Office
- Sergio Lara-Bercial - Co-founder of ICOACHKIDS, Professor of Sports Coaching at Leeds Beckett University, and VP for Strategy & Development at the International Council for Coaching Excellence
- Carlos Prieto - former world-class player and founder of Share & Play
- Vanessa Patucca-Bourgeais - EHF expert for kindergarden handball at the French Handball Federation
- Martin Goepfert - Member of the Board of the German Handball Federation
- Alex Gehrer - EHF Beach Handball Expert
- As well as various experts from leading national associations and other sports federations such as FIBA and UEFA
There will also be an exhibition and networking area where companies and organisations can present their products and services. The event will also include interactive elements such as the "cycle of handball life," various forms of play in the form of mini goals and beach handball as well as nutrition tips for children.
Participants will also be able to purchase tickets for the EHF EURO Group C men's matches on the evening of the event day (€65, KAT 2), where Montenegro will face Iceland and Serbia will take on Hungary. TUM students and TUM employees can still buy "early-bird" tickets until the end of November.
