Melina Schnitzius receives the scholarship from the Bavarian Universities in accordance with the Bavarian promotional law for elite students. On the basis of her high-class achievements and exceptional personality, this doctoral candidate at the Professorship for Sport and Health Didactics under Prof. Dr. Filip Mess is the only candidate at the Munich University of Technology to receive such support during this cycle. The subject field of the supported doctoral project of Schnitzius is "The Personality of Sport Instructors". "The fact that we are receiving this scholarship this year, as the only TUM institution, shows that our research is highly valued by the university and even Bavaria-wide, and also that we work on socially important subjects," says Prof. Mess.
Annually there are ten scholarships for doctoral candidates
The society of "Universität Bavaria e.V." is an association of eleven Bavarian universities which was founded in 2003. Each year, the association of the free state of Bavaria promotes ten doctoral candidates who may also come from the same university. As a rule, the candidates who are supported come particularly from the fields of mathematics, informatics and the natural sciences. "I am very happy that we have succeeded with our application from the Department of Sports and Health Didactics," says Schnitzius. In order to apply for this scholarship, and in accordance with the directives, she had to submit a synopsis of her doctoral thesis in the summer of 2016 along with a description of the support for doctoral candidates at the TUM School of Sport and Health Sciences by the Graduate School and the working sphere of the Chair. A prerequisite for the elite promotion was also the demonstration of exceptional pre-university schooling achievements and positive recommendations from scientists.
The scholarship financially consists of half of a position for a period of two years with the option of a one-year prolongation. During this time, the doctoral candidate at the Professorship for Sport and Health Didactics can enjoy the supporting program of the elite network and can, for example, visit Soft Skill seminars on varying subjects. Moreover, the scholarship offers great possibilities to extend one's own network and to also get to know interesting young scientists from other professional disciplines.
Investigation on the influence of personality on sport instructors
For her doctorate, the qualified sports and English teacher will work in the field of "Sports instructor personality" of the project "SuM PLUS: Sport Instruction and Motivation - The personality of the Instructors and Students as Determinants" which is carried out by Alina Kirch, Christina Oedl and Melina Schnitzius. This deals with the relationship between instructors' and students' personalities and the students' motivations in the sports education.
