Report Day 10
On the tenth and penultimate day of competition there were again 22 decisions.
In the C1 final over 5000 meters, 34-year-old canoeist Sebastian Brendel from Germany secured his second gold medal of the European Championships. Silver went to Balazs Adolf from Hungary. The K4 500 meter final also ended successfully for the German team consisting of Max Rendschmidt, Tom Liebscher, Jacob Schopf and Max Lemke. They finished first ahead of Slovakia and France. There was also a medal for the women, Paulina Paszek and Jule Hake won bronze in the K2 500 meter final. Gold went to Poland ahead of Belgium in silver.
In table tennis, Germany's top favorites Dimitrij Ovtcharov and Timo Boll lost in the quarterfinals. Ovtcharov was beaten by Sweden's Kristian Karlsson, while Timo Boll lost to his German teammate from Düsseldorf, Dang Qiu. The latter also won his semifinal against Mattias Falck from Sweden and is thus in the final.
A German also made it to the women's final, Nina Mittelham defeated her compatriot Xiaona Shan in the semifinals. In the other semifinal, Sabine Winter, also a German, narrowly lost to Sofia Polcanova of Austria.
The last German beach volleyball duo was also eliminated. Nils Ehlers and Clemens Wickler lost in the quarterfinals to world and Olympic champions Anders Mol and Christian Sørum of Norway. The women's competition was won by the duo from Latvia ahead of the duos from Switzerland and the Netherlands.
In the men's apparatus gymnastics team final, things looked good for the German team for a long time, but then Glenn Trebing injured his knee during the floor routine. He finished his routine in pain, but it was not enough for a good score. Germany ended up in seventh place. Gold went to the team from Great Britain ahead of the Italian and Turkish teams.
In the mountain bike final there was a French double success, Loana Lecomte and Pauline Ferrand Prevot took gold and silver. Best German was Leonie Daubermann in 17th place.
There were eight more medal decisions in track and field, starting with the walking competitions early in the morning. In the men's race, Spain's Álvaro Martín was the fastest over the 20-kilometer course, while the best German was Leo Köpp in ninth place. In the women's race, Germany's Saskia Feige finished third to take the bronze medal.
In the men's pole vault, Bo Kanda Lita Baehre finished in a very good second place behind world record holder Armand Duplantis of Sweden.
In the women's and men's 4 x 400 meter finals, the German relays had no chance of winning medals. The men's relay team, consisting of Marvin Schlegel, Patrick Schneider, Marc Koch and Manuel Sanders, finished in seventh place. Gold went to the team from Great Britain and Northern Ireland. The women's team with Luna Thiel, Mona Mayer, Alica Schmidt and Carolina Krafzik finished fifth despite a season's best performance. The team from the Netherlands secured gold.
In the women's 800-meter final, local hero Christina Hering ran out of steam on the home stretch. In the end, she finished seventh, with gold going to Keely Hodgkinson of Great Britain, who is only 20 years old.
Greek Elina Tzengko won gold in the javelin. Germany's Annika Marie Fuchs was eliminated after only three attempts in eleventh place.
The full day's program was concluded with the final of the women's 3000-meter steeplechase. Germany's Lea Meyer went along with the high pace of the race from the beginning and finished somewhat surprisingly in second place. She beat her own personal best by ten seconds. Gold went to the favored Luiza Gega from Albania.
Preview Day 11
Sunday is the eleventh and last day of competition at the European Championships, where the last medals for the athletes are at stake.
Canoe
At the Olympic regatta facility in Oberschleissheim, there is again a full day's program. It starts at 9:06 a.m. with the decision in the KL3 200m women's final of the para-canoeists. Throughout the day, the other medal decisions will follow, with the women's K4 500m final concluding at 2:26 p.m. in Oberschleißheim.
Beach volleyball
In beach volleyball, the two semifinals, the third-place match and the grand final are scheduled at Königsplatz. The last German duo Ehlers/Wickler unfortunately already dropped out of the competition yesterday afternoon. Start is at 11 am, the final is scheduled for 5:30 pm.
Gymnastics
In gymnastics, all decisions in the men's individual competitions are scheduled today (floor, pommel horse, rings, vault, parallel bars and high bar). From the German point of view, Nils Dunkel on pommel horse and Lukas Dauser on parallel bars are still hoping for a medal. Especially Lukas Dauser wants to win the next big medal on parallel bars after his silver medal at the Olympic Games in Tokyo.
Cycling
The women's road cycling race starts at 11:30 a.m. in Landsberg am Lech. After the 129.8 kilometers, the athletes are expected at Odeonsplatz in Munich at around 3 p.m. Lisa Brennauer, a German medal hopeful who will end her career afterwards, will also start.
Table tennis
The men's and women's singles finals are scheduled in the Rudi-Sedlmayer-Halle. Both finals will take place with German participation. Nina Mittelham will meet Sofia Polcanova from Austria at 2:30 pm. Afterwards, Dang Qiu will play his final against Darko Jorgic from Slovenia at 4 pm.
Athletics
The last medal decisions are also scheduled in the Olympic Stadium. The start is at 7:05 p.m. with the women's high jump, where Marie-Laurence Jungfleisch is also a German athlete in the final, but she probably has at best an outsider's chance of winning a medal. The decisions in the men's 800m final and the women's 100m hurdles final will take place without German participation. There will be again in the men's javelin throw, the men's 10,000m and the men's and women's 4x100m relays, the latter of which will conclude the European Championships in the Olympic Stadium at 21:22.
